Director, Artificial Intelligence & Knowledge
Overview
This role leads the organisation’s knowledge-management and innovation functions, shaping and executing the strategy for how it captures, manages and applies knowledge, and driving responsible adoption of technology and AI that improves the quality and efficiency of its legal services.
The Director oversees a team of managers and specialists across knowledge-management systems, practice innovation, and legal data/technology/compliance, working closely with the CIO and firm leadership to keep the AI and innovation agenda aligned with firm-wide goals.
Ideal candidates are lawyers with real experience in legal knowledge management or innovation, strong leadership and communication skills, and enough credibility to work effectively with partners and stakeholders across the organisation.
Key responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Support the CIO in shaping and running the firm’s knowledge-management and innovation strategy, bringing deep legal-tech, KM and AI expertise.
- Act as a senior internal voice on responsible AI adoption, advising on evaluation, governance and implementation frameworks.
- Track the legal-tech landscape and turn trends into actionable recommendations.
- Serve as a trusted resource for partners and practice leaders on knowledge-management and innovation matters.
- Keep the team’s work aligned with the firm’s broader IT strategy.
Team Leadership
- Lead and develop a team of managers and specialists across knowledge management, AI, practice innovation, and legal data/technology/compliance.
- Build a high-performing, accountable, client-focused team culture.
- Provide development support to direct reports so they can lead their own teams effectively.
Knowledge Management
- Oversee the firm’s knowledge infrastructure — intranet, wiki, enterprise search, document management.
- Keep knowledge assets organised, accessible, secure and continuously improving.
- Champion firm-wide knowledge sharing of expertise, precedent and institutional know-how.
Practice Innovation & Technology Adoption
- Oversee the innovation pipeline — evaluating, piloting and implementing practice-focused technology.
- Shape the firm’s AI-adoption strategy, including frameworks for tool assessment and risk management.
- Partner with practice groups to find high-value technology opportunities grounded in real workflows.
- Oversee change management and adoption for new tools, with training and engagement built in.
Risk & Compliance
- Set direction on AI governance and technology risk/compliance, upholding confidentiality, data security and professional-responsibility standards.
- Act as escalation point for complex issues spanning legal practice, technology risk and compliance.
- Oversee responses to client questions about the firm’s AI/technology use.
- Work with the vendor-management office and outside counsel on technology contract review and negotiation, with a focus on AI risk and data handling.
- Track the regulatory/professional-responsibility landscape and flag needed policy changes.
Vendor & Budget Management
- Manage relationships with key knowledge-management and legal-tech vendors to ensure real value and strategic alignment.
- Own the AI & Knowledge budget — spend, commitments, multi-year planning with the CIO and Finance.
- Partner with the vendor-management office on negotiations and vendor performance.
What we're looking for
- JD or foreign equivalent required.
- 8+ years in knowledge management, legal technology, innovation or a related field, with progression into leadership.
- Large law firm experience required; AmLaw 100 experience strongly preferred.
- Deep familiarity with knowledge-management tools and systems — document management, enterprise search, intranet/wiki, legal AI.
- Track record evaluating, implementing and governing legal-tech/AI tools, understanding the associated risk and compliance implications.
- Familiarity with outside counsel guidelines, vendor contracts and law-firm risk/compliance frameworks.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills across all levels of the organisation.
- Proven ability to lead high-performing teams in professional services.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Sound judgement and discretion; comfortable operating at both strategic and hands-on levels.
- Strong grasp of confidentiality, conflicts, data security and ethical technology use in legal practice.
