Overview

This role leads the development and rollout of the organisation’s AI-governance framework, ensuring compliance with evolving legal and ethical standards around AI safety and responsible use.

It works closely with the General Counsel’s office and Information Security to manage responses to AI-related provisions in outside counsel guidelines, client questionnaires and audits, and provides strategic advisory input on AI initiatives under consideration, ensuring alignment with risk protocols and client requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead development and rollout of AI-governance strategy aligned to client, organisational and ethical requirements.
  • Own the design and upkeep of a full AI-governance framework matching industry best practice and regulation.
  • Set and maintain policies and documentation for responsible AI development and deployment.
  • Work cross-functionally to fold AI governance into existing compliance/risk processes.
  • Review and respond to AI-related terms in engagement letters and outside counsel guidelines.
  • Advise internal teams and clients on AI governance and compliance questions.
  • Engage directly with clients on generative-AI use and the firm’s governance framework.
  • Assess vendor compliance on AI-related legal, ethical and security standards.
  • Run AI risk assessments and maintain AI inventories/catalogues per best practice and regulation.
  • Lead change management and champion continuous improvement.
  • Give legal advice on AI matters and ensure compliance with relevant law.
  • Review contracts and draft AI/new-technology-related language.
  • Track evolving AI/data-governance law, regulation and trends.
  • Liaise with regulators as needed.
  • Set KPIs to measure AI initiative impact and monitor ongoing ethical/operational performance.
  • Audit compliance with the AI framework and relevant law.
  • Act as strategic partner and point of contact for senior stakeholders, including the firm’s AI task force and technology committee.
  • Spot and mitigate legal risk proactively.
  • Help operationalise new technology, with a focus on AI.
  • Design and deliver training on AI-governance principles.
  • Lead, mentor and develop team members, including performance reviews and compensation recommendations.

What we're looking for

  • Strong interpersonal skills across all levels of the organisation.
  • Solid grounding in generative AI, machine learning and NLP and their real-world legal/corporate applications.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant AI and privacy law, including the EU AI Act and GDPR.
  • Excellent organisational and project-management skills — prioritisation, deadlines, anticipating obstacles.
  • Strong analytical, writing and presentation skills.
  • Able to drive large, long-term projects and develop solutions independently.
  • Sound independent judgement and discretion.
  • Comfortable handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • 10+ years’ relevant professional-services experience.
  • Law degree from an accredited school; admission to at least one US state bar.
